Solar FAQ — Baltimore, Anne Arundel & Montgomery County | Smart Solar Solution

Question 1

How much does solar installation cost in Maryland?

Accepted Answer

Most Maryland homeowners pay $0 out of pocket with our financing options. The gross system cost before incentives typically ranges from $18,000–$28,000 for a standard home, but after the 30% federal tax credit, Maryland state incentives, and our $0-down financing, your monthly solar payment is often less than your current electric bill — meaning you save from day one.

Question 2

What is the $0 out-of-pocket installation offer?

Accepted Answer

We partner with top-tier solar lenders to offer $0 down financing for qualified homeowners. You pay nothing upfront — no installation fees, no equipment costs, no permits. Your first payment doesn't start until your panels are producing power. Most customers see a net savings of $50–$150/month compared to their old electric bill.

Question 3

What financing options are available for Maryland homeowners?

Accepted Answer

We offer three paths: (1) $0-down solar loan — own your system, keep all tax credits and incentives, build equity; (2) Solar lease — fixed low monthly payment, no ownership, no tax credit; (3) Cash purchase — highest long-term ROI, typically 6–8 year payback. We recommend the solar loan for most Maryland homeowners because you own the system and capture the full 30% federal tax credit.

Question 4

How long until my solar system pays for itself?

Accepted Answer

For Maryland homeowners using our $0-down loan, the system is cash-flow positive from month one — your solar payment is less than your old electric bill. For cash purchases, the typical payback period is 6–8 years, after which you generate free electricity for the remaining 17–19 years of the panel warranty.

Question 5

What solar incentives are available in Maryland in 2026?

Accepted Answer

Maryland homeowners can stack multiple incentives: (1) 30% Federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) — reduces your federal tax bill by 30% of the system cost; (2) Maryland Clean Energy Grant — up to $1,000 for residential systems; (3) Maryland Solar Renewable Energy Credits (SRECs) — earn ongoing payments for the electricity your panels produce; (4) Property tax exemption — your home's increased value from solar is exempt from Maryland property taxes; (5) BGE, Pepco, and SMECO net metering — sell excess power back to the grid at retail rates.

Question 6

How does the 30% federal solar tax credit work?

Accepted Answer

The Investment Tax Credit (ITC) lets you deduct 30% of your total solar system cost from your federal income taxes. For a $22,000 system, that's a $6,600 tax credit — not a deduction, but a dollar-for-dollar reduction in what you owe the IRS. If you use our $0-down loan, you can apply the tax credit as a lump-sum payment against your loan principal, significantly reducing your monthly payment.

Question 7

What is net metering and how does it work in Maryland?

Accepted Answer

Net metering lets you sell excess solar electricity back to your utility at the full retail rate. In Maryland, BGE, Pepco, SMECO, and other utilities are required to offer net metering. When your panels produce more than you use (typically midday), the excess spins your meter backward. At night or on cloudy days, you draw from the grid. Your bill reflects only the net difference — often $0–$20/month.

Question 8

Do solar panels increase my property taxes in Maryland?

Accepted Answer

No. Maryland law exempts the added home value from solar panels from property tax assessment. Your home will be worth more — studies show solar adds $15,000–$25,000 to Maryland home values — but your property tax bill won't increase because of the solar system.

Question 9

How long does solar installation take in Maryland?

Accepted Answer

From signed contract to panels producing power, the typical timeline is 6–10 weeks: Week 1–2: Site assessment and system design. Week 2–4: Permit applications with your county (Baltimore, Anne Arundel, or Montgomery County). Week 4–6: Utility interconnection application to BGE, Pepco, or SMECO. Week 6–8: Installation day (1–2 days for most homes). Week 8–10: Final inspection and utility activation. We handle every step — you don't need to contact the county or utility yourself.

Question 10

Will solar panels work on my roof in Maryland?

Accepted Answer

Most Maryland homes are excellent solar candidates. South-facing roofs with a 15–40° pitch produce the most power, but east and west-facing roofs still generate 80–90% of optimal output. We assess shading from trees, chimneys, and neighboring structures during your free site visit. If your roof has significant shading, we may recommend ground-mounted panels instead. Roof age matters too — if your roof is over 15 years old, we'll recommend replacing it before installation.

Question 11

Do I need to replace my roof before going solar?

Accepted Answer

Only if your roof is near end-of-life. Solar panels typically last 25–30 years, so we want your roof to last at least as long. If your roof is under 10 years old and in good condition, you're fine. If it's 15+ years old, we'll assess it during the site visit. Many homeowners bundle a roof replacement with their solar installation — we can coordinate this and roll the cost into the same financing.

Question 12

What happens to my solar panels during a Maryland winter or storm?

Accepted Answer

Maryland solar panels are engineered for all weather. They're rated for wind speeds up to 140 mph and snow loads up to 50 lbs/sq ft — well above Maryland's typical conditions. Snow actually slides off the angled panels quickly, and cold sunny days are actually more efficient for solar production than hot summer days. During Hurricane season, our mounting systems are designed to exceed Maryland building codes.

Question 13

What permits are required for solar in Baltimore County?

Accepted Answer

Baltimore County requires a building permit and electrical permit for solar installations. We handle all permit applications on your behalf at no extra charge. Baltimore County's permitting office typically processes solar permits in 2–4 weeks. We're familiar with local inspectors and code requirements, which helps avoid delays.

Question 14

Which utility serves Baltimore County and how does net metering work?

Accepted Answer

Most of Baltimore County is served by BGE (Baltimore Gas & Electric). BGE offers full retail net metering — meaning excess solar power is credited at the same rate you pay for electricity. BGE's interconnection process typically takes 2–4 weeks after installation. We submit all interconnection paperwork to BGE on your behalf.

Question 15

How much can Baltimore homeowners save with solar?

Accepted Answer

Baltimore homeowners with average electric bills of $150–$200/month typically save $1,200–$1,800/year after going solar. Over 25 years, that's $30,000–$45,000 in savings (accounting for utility rate increases of ~3%/year). BGE rates have increased an average of 4.2% annually over the past decade, making solar a strong hedge against rising electricity costs.

Question 16

Is solar worth it in Anne Arundel County?

Accepted Answer

Absolutely. Anne Arundel County homeowners benefit from Maryland's strong solar incentives, BGE net metering, and above-average electricity rates. Annapolis, Severna Park, Glen Burnie, and Pasadena homeowners consistently see 20–30% reductions in their annual energy costs. The county also has no additional solar restrictions beyond standard building permits.

Question 17

Are there HOA restrictions on solar panels in Anne Arundel County?

Accepted Answer

Maryland's Solar Access Law (§ 2-120 of the Real Property Article) prohibits HOAs from banning solar panels outright. HOAs may regulate placement to minimize visibility from the street, but cannot prevent installation entirely. We've successfully navigated HOA approvals across dozens of Anne Arundel County communities and can help you through the process.

Question 18

What makes Montgomery County a great place for solar?

Accepted Answer

Montgomery County has some of the highest electricity rates in Maryland (served by Pepco), making solar savings even larger. The county also has strong environmental policies supporting renewable energy adoption. Bethesda, Rockville, Silver Spring, and Gaithersburg homeowners typically see $1,500–$2,200/year in savings. Montgomery County also offers expedited permitting for solar installations.

Question 19

How does Pepco net metering work in Montgomery County?

Accepted Answer

Pepco (Potomac Electric Power Company) serves most of Montgomery County and is required by Maryland law to offer net metering. Excess solar power is credited at the full retail rate. Pepco's interconnection process typically takes 3–5 weeks. We handle all Pepco paperwork and coordinate the final meter upgrade at no cost to you.

Question 20

How much electricity will my solar panels produce in Maryland?

Accepted Answer

Maryland averages 4.5–5.0 peak sun hours per day — enough for solar to be highly productive year-round. A typical 8kW system on a Maryland home produces 9,000–11,000 kWh per year, covering 80–100% of average household electricity use. We size your system based on your actual 12-month electricity usage to maximize your savings.

Question 21

What happens to my electric bill after going solar?

Accepted Answer

Most Maryland homeowners see their electric bill drop to $5–$20/month (the minimum BGE/Pepco service charge) during spring and fall when production matches usage. In summer, you'll likely produce excess power and earn net metering credits. In winter, you may draw some grid power. Annually, most customers offset 80–100% of their electricity use.

Question 22

Do solar panels work on cloudy days in Maryland?

Accepted Answer

Yes — solar panels produce electricity from daylight, not direct sunlight. On overcast days, panels typically produce 10–25% of their peak output. Maryland's climate is well-suited for solar: we get enough sunny days that annual production meets projections. Germany, which has far less sun than Maryland, generates a significant portion of its electricity from solar.
